National Occupational Standards for Paraplanning

"The development of National Occupational Standards is very welcome. This means we can develop our recruitment, training and development structure, and remunerate accordingly."

Morven Grierson, Office Manager, S4 Financial PLC

Background information

The role of Paraplanning is a relatively new one and is essential to providing a comprehensive financial planning service to clients.

Paraplanners are individuals who support and work alongside financial planners in a technical research role - involving research and report writing. The function was created in order to allow financial planners to focus more on the client relationship and the selling role.

While some organisations have departments set up for Paraplanners, there are also a number of outsourcing organisations who can provide Paraplanning services upon request.

The National Occupational Standards

The project to develop National Occupational Standards for Paraplanning was launched in July 2008 and the early work saw the recruitment of a Working Group who helped inform a Functional Map. The final version of this can be downloaded below.

Between January and March 2009 we consulted with the industry on the draft NOS, via a questionnaire on our website, and some very helpful feedback was provided. This was reviewed by the project Working Group in March and was incorporated into a final draft version of the Standards.

The National Occupational Standards for Paraplanning were approved for publication in July 2009 and they can be accessed below.

The units can also be downloaded individually from the NOS Directory, at
