Highlight

The FSSC is currently undertaking a review of the current Scottish Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship Framework in Accounting and are also considering developing new Modern Apprenticeship Frameworks at Levels 2 and 4 in Accounting. We are also considering developing new Modern Apprenticeship Frameworks in other related areas such as Payroll and Bookeeping.

Scotland - Sector Skills Agreement

Sector Skills Agreements are agreements between employers, stakeholders, the government and partner organisations. They are designed to address the major skills challenges facing the UK, with this SSA focusing on Scotland.

Sector statistics

Scotland is internationally recognised as the second largest financial centre outside London and one that has had a strong and long history in financial services. Financial services in Scotland accounts for almost 8% of Scotland's GVA, employing around 91,000, just under 4% of its workforce.

The financial services industry in Scotland is diverse and includes global companies, UK companies and smaller companies focusing on the Scottish market. Scotland has strong representation in banking, life assurance and pensions, investment management and asset servicing and also provides services in general insurance, corporate finance and financial advice.

FSSC's current priorities in Scotland include working with financial services employers and partners to:
• Promote the careers in financial services
• Research employability skills issues and develop solutions
• Help address leadership & management issues at first line manager level
• Participate in the Financial Services Implementation Group (FiSIG) including the setting up of the Financial Services Skills Gateway

 

Partners

The FSSC in Scotland is engaged with many partners who are working to address skills issues for financial services in Scotland. These include organisations such as the Scottish Government, Financial Services Implementation Groups (FiSIG), The Financial Services Skills Gateway, Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Financial Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Qualifications Authority, Scottish Funding Council, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, The Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland, Scottish Investment Operations, The Chartered Insurance Institute, The Alliance of Sector Skills Councils for Scotland, Jobcentre Plus, Scottish Trade Unions Congress, Universities and Colleges.

Linda joined the FSSC in July 2008. She worked in various management roles with Abbey and Scottish Widows prior to heading up Scottish Investment Operations (SIO) for six years. At SIO she promoted the investment operations sector, developed advanced qualifications and an introductory training course which attracted sponsorship to train unemployed people for careers in the sector. More recently Linda worked at Scottish Financial Enterprise (SFE) on a consultancy basis.

Linda says ‘I am delighted to be part of the FSSC team working with financial services employers and partners to address the skills issues in Scotland. My financial services background together with my recent work in skills development and promotion of financial services careers will be of benefit in working with others to strengthen our financial services workforce.'
