What are National Occupational Standards
National Occupational Standards (NOS) describe what an individual needs to do, know and understand in order to carry out a particular job role or function. As such, they cover the key activities undertaken within the occupation in question under all the circumstances which the job holder is likely to encounter. They describe “can do” rather than just “might be able to do”. Within the financial services industry there are NOS for the following:
- Advised sales
- Anti-money Laundering
- Bank accounts
- Compliance
- Financial services ustomer care
- Financial services customer payments
- Financial services core competences
- Insurance claims
- Insurance intermediation
- Insurance underwriting
- Long term insurance
- Investment administration
- Leadership and management
- Lending and credit
- Pension scheme administration
- Providing advice for retirement
- Providing financial advice
- Generic financial advice
- Financial services sales process
- Securities and Derivatives
NOS are developed, maintained and updated in conjunction with industry practitioners, who are invited to attend project working groups, and with three new NOS projects launched we are currently very keen to hear from practitioners involved in the following:
- Training & Competence – those who design and maintain, supervise and audit schemes
- Management and prevention of financial crime
- Risk management for the financial sector – those who develop and operate risk management systems
Further details about practitioner involvement in these new projects can be found at the National Occupational Standards under development section of this website.
NOS exist for a wide range of occupations and they are stored in a centralised directory which can be accessed at the following link http://www.ukstandards.co.uk/Find_Occupational_Standards .aspx
