Biographies

 

Roy Leighton

Roy LeightonRoy Leighton has had a long career in both the traditional and the modern financial services industry in the UK. He has worked in many aspects of the banking world at home and abroad and was UK Chairman of Credit Lyonnais and its successor Calyon SA.

He has chaired the Practioner Panel at the FSA and the FOA, the European derivatives association.

Currently he chairs the Financial Services Advisory Board at UKTI and is Chairman of the Financial Services Skills Council.  His business interests include board membership of several listed businesses covering Private Equity in China, the Dubai Mercantile Exchange and the derivatives operations of the London Stock Exchange.

He taught at the Cass Business School for many years and was made an Honorary Professor of City University in 2001. He is Trustee of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

Gareth Marr

Gareth MarrGareth Marr is a director of The Red House, a private client advisory firm he formed with partners in 2007.

He left Origen in December 2006. CEO from 2004, he merged five IFAs (A&B, Elliott Bayley, Aurora, Wentworth Rose and Momentum) into one company and launched the new Origen brand.

Businesses run by Gareth have won IFA of the year, Pensions IFA of the year (twice) Professional development IFA of the year and Investment IFA of the year.

Gareth has over 30 years' experience in financial services, initially with Phoenix Assurance Company and Pointon York.  In 1984 he formed his own company, Moores Marr Bradley and 1999 joined A&B.  He is a Board member of the Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC), and has been Deputy Chairman of FIMBRA, Chairman of the Association of Pensioneer Trustees, and has worked with various committees for the PIA, SIB and FSA.

Marcia Campbell

Marcia CampbellMarcia Campbell is the Group Operations Director, Standard Life, responsible for strategy and planning and 1500 staff in group shared services such as HR, IT, Estates, Facilities and Legal.

She was previously Company Secretary and Deputy General Manager of Customer Services.  Before joining Standard Life in 1990, Marcia worked for a major international consultancy.

Marcia is an Independent Assessor for Appointments to Public Bodies and a member of the Governing Body of Queen Margaret University College.

Dan Corr

Dan CorrDan Corr is a retired Area Director for Nationwide Building Society in Northern Ireland.  He served at Nationwide for 40 years.  He is a past president of the Council for Mortgage Lenders and is a business ambassador for Business in the Community for Northern Ireland (appointed by HRH The Prince of Wales).

  Dan is on the Accreditation Panel for Investors in People.  He previously sat on the Training & Skills Advisory Board and the Northern Ireland General Consumer Council.

John Earls

John EarlsJohn Earls is Research Section Head at Unite the Union (Amicus section), the UK’s largest trade union with 2 million members in the private and public sectors. Unite operates across the finance sector and represents staff in all grades and all occupations. John was previously Joint Head of Research at UNIFI, the specialist finance sector trade union. 

John was a member of the Financial Services Authority’s Advisory Group on Financial Capability and a member of the Commissioning Panel for the Economic and Social Research Council’s e-society research programme. John has had articles published in a range of journals on issues such as the world of work and the future for trade unions.

David Gittings

David GittingsDavid Gittings was appointed Chief Executive of the LMA in December 2006.  From 1995 to 2002, David was Director of Regulation at Lloyd’s of London.  He was a founding director of the General Insurance Standards Council, where he served in a non-executive capacity from 1999 to 2002, and is currently a director of the Financial Services Skills Council.   David served as the first chairman of the Lloyd’s Market Association’s Professional Standards Committee from November 2004 and in November 2006 was appointed chairman of the London Market Faculty Board of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).  He has an honours degree in Law from London University and was called to the bar at Middle Temple.

Mike Godfrey

Mike GodfreyMike Godfrey is founder and Managing Director of FS3 Ltd. He has worked in financial services since 1978 and progressed through the industry, holding a senior role at Robert Flemings prior to setting up FS3 in 1999. Mike is both a Certified Financial Planner (Institute of Financial Planning) and a Chartered Financial Planner (Personal Finance Society). FS3 has built up an enviable client list and a strong reputation developing into an award winning fee based employee benefit and wealth management practice, winning New Model Adviser of the Year - South East Region in both 2006 and 2007, and Bankhall Member of the Year 2006.

Tracey Hahn

Tracey HahnTracey Hahn is Head of HR (Leadership and Talent Management) at Merrill Lynch with overall responsibility for the LTM function across the region, Europe Middle East and Africa.   Merrill Lynch has approx 7,000 employees in the EMEA Region operating across three businesses; Global Markets, Investment Banking and Global Private Client.

From 2002 to June 2005, Tracey was Head of HR for the Merrill Lynch Global Debt Markets business based in New York.  She moved from London to New York in 2001 to serve as Head of HR for the Chief Financial Office.  Previously, she was head of HR for the Merrill Lynch & Co. Support organizations across EMEA. She joined Merrill Lynch in 1996 as HR Manager for the Operations, Systems and Technology group in EMEA.

Previously Tracey held a number of HR positions in telecommunications, working for Cable & Wireless plc and has a Masters in Strategic Human Resource Development.

Angela Knight CBE

Angela KnightAfter leaving Bristol University with an honours degree in chemistry, Angela worked for the American industrial gas company Air Products Ltd.  She was the product development manager for the application and sales of nitrogen as an inert carrier during the treatment of ferrous metal components. 

She went on to set up and was Chief Executive of a specialist contract heat treatment company treating precision engineering components - Cook & Knight Metallurgical Processors Ltd - and associated process plant manufacturing company.

From 1987 to 1992 she was Councillor and Chief Whip on Sheffield City Council.  She entered Parliament in 1992 as MP for Erewash and was Economic Secretary to the Treasury between 1995 and 1997, when she lost her seat at the General Election.  She was the Chief Executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers from September 1997 to December 2006.

She is currently the Chief Executive of the British Bankers Association.  She is also a non-executive director on the boards of LogicaCMG, IFSL, and Brewin Dolphin and a trust member of the Port of London Authority.

David Legg

David LeggDavid joined Morgan Stanley in 1995 after more than 10 years as a management consultant with Andersen Consulting, Ernst & Young and Price Waterhouse. This period of consulting was briefly interrupted for three years as David took a permanent position with JP Morgan as an IT officer.

Since joining Morgan Stanley David has worked on a number of process re-engineering and technology assignments within Operations, run the Project Management Office for the EMU project and headed up the Corporate Actions and the Equity Cash Infrastructure departments. Prior to his current role, David was Chief Operations officer for Finance and Operations in Europe

David is currently the Head of Infrastructure Divisional Management in Europe, reporting to the European CAO, David Nicol. In this capacity he has a number of responsibilities including coordinating the European Offshoring programme as well as General Management of Morgan Stanley’s Glasgow office.

David holds a 1st class Honours degree in Accounting and Computing and is married to Sarah who is a magistrate. They have two children, Matthew and Nicola.

Teresa Sayers (ex officio)

Teresa SayersTeresa Sayers is Chief Executive of the Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC).  As Chief Executive, Teresa is responsible for the FSSC’s mission to provide strategic leadership for financial services education, training and skills development across the UK. Teresa is also Chief Executive of the new National Skills Academy for Financial Services.

Teresa sits on the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s High-Level Group on Financial Services, which works to enhance the global competitiveness of the City and the UK-based financial sector.

Teresa joined the FSSC’s predecessor, the Financial Services National Training Organisation, as Business Development Manager in 2001. She led the team through a time of significant transition, culminating in the successful awarding, in 2004, of the FSSC’s licence from the government to become a Sector Skills Council.

Teresa is a member of the Guild of International Bankers, the Guild of Educators, UK Trade & Investment's Financial Services Sector Advisory Board and Northern Ireland’s Financial Future Skills Action Group.

Prior to her career in financial services Teresa worked in the oil industry as a researcher.  She has a BSc in plant bio-technology.

John Tiner CBE

John Tiner was appointed FSA Chief Executive in September 2003. He joined the FSA in April 2001 as Managing Director of Consumer, Investment and Insurance Directorate following a broad-ranging career at Arthur Andersen. As Managing Director he spearheaded reform of regulation of the insurance industry and handled the implications of testing conditions in the equity market. He also had the most senior responsibility within the FSA for consumer interests and for developing the regulatory regime for mortgage and general insurance business.

At the FSA, he led the Tiner Review, which transformed the insurance industry, negotiated a settlement bringing compensation to investors in split capital trusts and championed the financial capability programme to address the problems caused by consumers not understanding personal finance management. He reorganised the FSA into three business units, covering retail markets, wholesale markets and regulatory services, which brought greater focus to the organisation. He also led the drive away from detailed rules towards more principles-based regulation. He stepped down from his role at the FSA in July 2007.

John joined Arthur Andersen in 1976 and became Head of their world-wide Financial Services Industry practice in 1997. He led the Bank of England review of UK banking supervision in 1996 and worked on significant financial services assignments in Japan, the US, Germany, Norway and the Czech Republic. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

John is currently a non-executive director of New Star Asset Management Group plc, a member of the advisory board of Corsair Capital LLC in New York, a senior adviser to Fenchurch Advisory Partners, a member of the advisory board of the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation and a trustee of the British Urological Foundation.

Richard Wastcoat

Richard WastcoatRichard is the Managing Director of Fidelity Investment Services Ltd, UK, with responsibility for Fidelity's retail investment products and services, which are distributed through independent financial advisers and other intermediaries as well as direct to the consumer.  He is also responsible for FundsNetwork, Fidelity's online fund supermarket which offers over 800 funds from over 50 providers. Richard is also responsible for Fidelity's mutual fund business in India, the Netherlands and the Nordic region, and has product responsibility for Fidelity's range of OEICs and investment trusts. Richard joined Fidelity in 1983 in Dallas, Texas after working in a number of marketing and management positions in London and Hong Kong. 

Richard is a member of the Investment Management Association's Investment Funds and Education Committees. He was born in New York and graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in Business Administration.

Dan Waters

Dan Waters is the Director of Retail Policy and the FSA "Sector Leader" for asset management, being responsible for the FSA's overall strategy and liaison with the fund management industry.  He is also the UK's representative on the CESR Expert Group on Investment Management and IOSCO Standing Committee 5 on Investment Management. 

Prior to his current role Dan was Director of the FSA Regulatory Strategy and Risk Division responsible for the FSA's strategic planning, risk management and assessment systems, performance measurement and risk analysis and research.

Dan was the FSA's first Director of Enforcement.  He previously worked at the Investment Management Regulatory Organisation where he was Director of Monitoring and Enforcement, and at the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission where he was Head of International Enforcement Operations.

Elizabeth Hughes 

Elizabeth Hughes works on Strategic Analysis in the Financial Services Strategy team at HM Treasury. Her role is to provide strategic analysis on key policy areas for the Financial Services sector. This includes work on some of the strategic priorities identified by the Chancellor's High Level Group on City Competitiveness, for example boosting professional skills in the financial services sector, and areas identified as high-growth, such as Islamic Finance.
