Chairman: Trevor Matthews

CEO, Friends Provident

Trevor Matthews has been CEO of Friends Provident since July 2008, having joined from Standard Life Assurance Limited where he was Chief Executive for four years. He was previously President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Japan from 2001 to 2004 and Executive Vice President of Canadian Operations and Chairman of Manulife Bank from 1998 to 2001. Prior to this, Trevor was General Manager of Personal Finance Services for National Australia Bank, 1996 to 1998, and Managing Director of Legal & General Assurance Holdings Australia Limited between 1989 and 1996.

Trevor was President of the Chartered Insurance Institute for a year from July 2008, having previously been Deputy President. In 1997 he was President of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

Deputy Chairman: Gareth Marr

Director, The Red House

Gareth Marr is a director of The Red House, a private client advisory firm he formed with partners in 2007.

He left Origen in December 2006. CEO from 2004, he merged five IFAs (A&B, Elliott Bayley, Aurora, Wentworth Rose and Momentum) into one company and launched the new Origen brand.

Businesses run by Gareth have won IFA of the year, Pensions IFA of the year (twice) Professional development IFA of the year and Investment IFA of the year.

Gareth has over 30 years' experience in financial services, initially with Phoenix Assurance Company and Pointon York.  In 1984 he formed his own company, Moores Marr Bradley and 1999 joined A&B.  He is a Board member of the Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC), and has been Deputy Chairman of FIMBRA, Chairman of the Association of Pensioneer Trustees, and has worked with various committees for the PIA, SIB and FSA.

Paul Boyle

Chief Executive, Financial Reporting Council

Paul Boyle is the Chief Executive of the Financial Reporting Council.The FRC aims to promote confidence in corporate reporting and governance.Its responsibilities include setting and enforcing accounting and auditing standards, setting actuaries standards and overseeing the regulatory activities of the accounting and actuarial professional bodies.

Paul is the Chairman of the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators, having been appointed as its first Vice-Chair in September 2006.

Previously Paul was the Chief Operating Officer of the Financial Services Authority.

Paul was also with Cadbury Schweppes for 8 years, including a spell as Group Financial Controller and latterly as a Director of Cadbury Limited, with responsibility for Finance, Information Technology, Purchasing and Cocoa Buying.

He trained with Coopers & Lybrand, and spent 8 years with the firm including 2 years in Turkey. His first job in industry was with WH Smith Group plc.

Bernadette Chambers-Brown

Bernadette Chambers-Brown

Human Resources Business Partner, Santander UK

 
Since 2004, Bernadette Chambers-Brown has been employed as a Human Resources Business Partner for Santander UK. Working across the UK, she is the divisional lead for performance and talent management, most notably introducing the new school leavers' programme in N. Ireland, for the Abbey brand.

She joined Armagh & City District Council in 2001 as Head of HR. Prior to this role, Bernadette was HR Director for ISA International plc. Reporting to the CEO, she had overall strategic responsibility for the HR function across Europe, including UK and Ireland.

Bernadette is a Fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Professional Development, and is married to Ken with one son, Adam.

Adrian Clarke

Adrian Clark

Cardiff Location Director and Chief Operating Officer for Protection, Legal & General Assurance Society Ltd

 
Adrian Clark is Cardiff Location Director and Chief Operating Officer for Protection throughout the UK (6 different locations) for Legal & General Assurance Society Ltd.

Adrian has been instrumental in developing the collaboration between Legal & General and Cardiff University to create the Medical Underwriting Academy. The success of the Academy has led to several teams of highly skilled professionals within the Financial Services Industry.

He has been employed for 30 years within the Financial Services industry, with the previous 10 years developing Legal & General's presence in South Wales, which now employs over 2000 staff.

He has been employed in many sectors of the Insurance industry from UK Life and Pensions to General Insurance and as an overseas advisor for development opportunities in both Thailand and Indonesia.

Adrian is newly appointed to the Financial Services Skills Council Board.

John Earls

Research Section Head, Unite


John Earls is Research Section Head at Unite, the UK's largest trade union with 2 million members in the private and public sectors. Unite operates across the finance sector and represents staff in all grades and all occupations. John was previously Head of Research at UNIFI, the specialist finance sector trade union.

John is a Research Associate at the London School of Economics and was a member of the Financial Services Authority's Advisory Group on Financial Capability. John has had articles published in a range of journals on issues such as the world of work and the future for trade unions.

John Gill

Managing Director, Customer Service, Standard Life

John Gill was appointed Managing Director, Customer Service in August 2006. He is responsible for the customer service provided to Standard Life's UK Financial Services
4.5 million customers. In addition he is currently acting CFO of Standard Life UK Financial Services.

John is a Director of Scottish Financial Enterprise.

John's background is as an actuary and he has spent his entire career of 22 years with Standard Life. From 2003 to 2006 he was Managing Director, Finance in UK & Europe Life & Pensions. From 1998 to 2003 he was Finance Director of Standard Life Bank. Prior to this he fulfilled a wide variety of roles for Standard Life in the UK and internationally including three years based in Montreal.

Tracey Hahn

Former Head of HR: Merrill Lynch Europe, Middle East and Africa

Tracey Hahn was Head of HR (Leadership and Talent Management) at Merrill Lynch with overall responsibility for the LTM function across the region, Europe Middle East and Africa.   Merrill Lynch has approx 7,000 employees in the EMEA Region operating across three businesses; Global Markets, Investment Banking and Global Private Client.

From 2002 to June 2005, Tracey was Head of HR for the Merrill Lynch Global Debt Markets business based in New York.  She moved from London to New York in 2001 to serve as Head of HR for the Chief Financial Office.  Previously, she was head of HR for the Merrill Lynch & Co. Support organisations across EMEA. She joined Merrill Lynch in 1996 as HR Manager for the Operations, Systems and Technology group in EMEA.

Previously Tracey held a number of HR positions in telecommunications, working for Cable & Wireless plc and has a Masters in Strategic Human Resource Development.

Angela Knight CBE

Chief Executive, British Bankers Association 

After leaving Bristol University with an honours degree in chemistry, Angela worked for the American industrial gas company Air Products Ltd.  She was the product development manager for the application and sales of nitrogen as an inert carrier during the treatment of ferrous metal components. 

She went on to set up and was Chief Executive of a specialist contract heat treatment company treating precision engineering components - Cook & Knight Metallurgical Processors Ltd - and associated process plant manufacturing company.

From 1987 to 1992 she was Councillor and Chief Whip on Sheffield City Council.  She entered Parliament in 1992 as MP for Erewash and was Economic Secretary to the Treasury between 1995 and 1997, when she lost her seat at the General Election.  She was the Chief Executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers from September 1997 to December 2006.

She is currently the Chief Executive of the British Bankers Association.  She is also a non-executive director on the boards of LogicaCMG, IFSL, and Brewin Dolphin and a trust member of the Port of London Authority.

David Legg

Managing Director, Morgan Stanley

David joined Morgan Stanley in 1995 after more than 10 years as a management consultant with Andersen Consulting, Ernst & Young and Price Waterhouse. This period of consulting was briefly interrupted for three years as David took a permanent position with JP Morgan as an IT officer.

Since joining Morgan Stanley David has worked on a number of process re-engineering and technology assignments within Operations, run the Project Management Office for the EMU project and headed up the Corporate Actions and the Equity Cash Infrastructure departments. Prior to his current role, David was Chief Operations officer for Finance and Operations in Europe

David is currently the Head of Infrastructure Divisional Management in Europe, reporting to the European CAO, David Nicol. In this capacity he has a number of responsibilities including coordinating the European Offshoring programme as well as General Management of Morgan Stanley’s Glasgow office.

David holds a 1st class Honours degree in Accounting and Computing and is married to Sarah who is a magistrate. They have two children, Matthew and Nicola.

Brendan Nelson

Vice Chairman of KPMG LLP UK and Global Chairman of KPMG’s Financial Services Practice

Brendan is a Vice Chairman of KPMG LLP UK and Global Chairman of KPMG’s Financial Services Practice.

He is one of five global industry chairmen within the firm, and coordinates the financial services practice on a worldwide basis. He has particular responsibility for the global client program for financial services to help ensure the effective coordination and delivery of KPMG’s services to all global clients. Brendan has carried out a wide variety of audit, regulatory, and due diligence engagements.

He is currently Global Lead Audit Partner for HSBC Holdings plc and Global Lead Partner for ING Group N.V.

Brendan has played a significant role in the development of the profession’s approach to the audit of banks in the UK with particular emphasis on establishing auditing standards of banks audits.

A Scottish chartered accountant by qualification, he has served as a member of the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and is currently Chairman of their Audit Committee.

Brendan was the first professional accountant to be appointed as a member of the Practitioner Panel, a UK statutory body that provides industry oversight to the UK Financial Services Authority and served 6 years as a panel member.

Prior to his current audit responsibilities, Brendan has been the Global Audit Partner for ING Bank NV, Credit Suisse Group, NatWest Group, Rothschilds, and Standard Chartered plc.

John Tiner

Chief Executive, Resolution Group

John Tiner was previously Chief Executive of the FSA, a position he held between September 2003 and July 2007 when he retired from the role. He had initially joined the FSA in June 2001 as Managing Director of consumer, insurance and investment business.

At the FSA, he was widely credited with modernising the regulation of the UK insurance industry and bringing a new risk-based and principles-based focus to regulation. He was also a member of the Committee of European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Regulators which steered the development of Solvency II. Before joining the FSA, Mr Tiner was a Managing Partner at Andersen responsible for its worldwide financial services practice. He joined Andersen in 1976, working mainly with banking and capital market clients. He led the Andersen team appointed by the Bank of England to investigate the collapse of Barings Bank and draw out the lessons to be learned. Mr Tiner is also a non-executive director of the Credit Suisse Group and a non-executive director of Lucida plc.

Mr Tiner was awarded a CBE in 2008 in recognition of his services to the finance industry and in 2010 was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters at his former college, Kingston University, in recognition of his contribution to the financial services industry.

Tony Vine-Lott FSI, FCIM

Director General of the Tax Incentivised Savings Association (TISA)

Tony spent his early business years in the IT industry; in Technical, Sales and Marketing roles, during this time he was responsible for staff and customer training at Wang UK and Honeywell NISD; however, much of the last twenty years he has been in retail financial services, nine of which were with Barclays PLC where, amongst other things, he set up Barclays Stockbrokers and was also Chairman of Barclays Trust Bank and Chairman of BISCO - the bank's IFA and general insurance division.

For the past seven years he has been the Director General of the Tax Incentivised Savings Association (TISA) formally known as PIMA, which is a trade body representing amongst others most of the major banks, life offices, fund managers and stockbrokers in the UK in the area of savings and investment schemes.

He is also currently Chair of the National Skills Academy for Financial Services.

In addition he has held the following appointments:

  • Chairman of London Stock Exchange, Scottish Regional Practitioners Group - 1993/1995
  • Member of the Private Shareholder Committee of the London Stock Exchange - 1995/96 which looked at the development of wider share ownership

Richard Wastcoat

Former Managing Director, Fidelity Investments International

Richard Wastcoat received a BS in Business Administration from Lehigh University, Bethlehem Pennsylvania in 1983. He joined Fidelity Investments in Dallas,Texas and relocated to London with Fidelity International in 1989. He worked on the development of Fidelity's business in a number of markets in South East Asia while based in Hong Kong from 1989 to 1996. He returned to the UK in 1996 and in 1999 became Chief Executive of Fidelity Investment Services with responsiblity for the UK mutual fund business and subsequently Funds Network, Fidelity's Platform business. In addition to his role in the UK he held additional roles concurrently. These included Fidelity's businesses in Spain and the Nordic Region (2001- 2004) , the Middle East and Africa (2005-2006) and since 2003 Fidelity's Asset Management Business in India. He retired from Fidelity in September 2008.

Mr Wastcoat was a member of the Board of the Investment Management Association and currently serves on the the Financial Services Skills Council and the Securities & Investment Institute.
