Investment Strategy & Management

National Occupational Standards for Investment Strategy and Management

The scope of these NOS for Investment Strategy and Management is seen as being: ‘The process of managing client assets within a structured framework to achieve given objectives.'

Background information

According to April 2009 statistics from the Investment Management Association, total funds under management (UK domiciled) equated to £374.9bn, with £74.1bn under ISA funds and £235.7bn under OEIC funds. Over half of UK households have savings and pensions which are looked after by the investment management industry.

As such, investment strategy and management roles are far-reaching and these NOS aim to describe the skill sets needed by individuals to undertake the function of managing a ‘pool' of assets on behalf of individuals and institutional organisations. Such a ‘pool' of assets may, for example, comprise equities (listed and unlisted), corporate and government fixed income bonds, investment funds of all types, commodities, property and cash (including foreign currencies) etc.

These NOS have been written for roles that are broadly defined as ‘front' office; those individuals that manage investments on behalf of others. They are intended for use by firms of all sizes, and cover a range of specialisms, roles and levels of staff.

The National Occupational Standards

Our project to develop National Occupational Standards for Investment Strategy and Management was launched in August 2008 and the early work involved desktop research and the assembling of a Working Group, with an initial Functional Map being produced. The final version of this can be downloaded here.

The draft National Occupational Standards for Investment Strategy and Management were widely reviewed during two industry consultation exercises which took place between January and April 2009, and the feedback received helped inform the final version of the Standards, including grouping the units under the following four headings:

  • Units to support all Investment Strategy and Management functions
  • Units to support investment analysis
  • Units to support those with responsibility for the management of investments of a collective fund
  • Units to support those with responsibility for the investment portfolio of an individual or a corporate entity

The National Occupational Standards for Investment Strategy and Management were approved for publication in July 2009 and they can be accessed below.

The units can also be downloaded individually from the NOS Directory, at www.ukstandards.org.uk/Find_Occupational_Standards.aspx?NosFindID=4&SuiteID=1943
